The news of the global superstar BTS (@BTS_twt) making the number one on the Billboard Hot 100 with the digital single ‘Dynamite’ caused a sensation on Twitter.
On September 1st, American music-specialized media Billboard (@billboard) released the latest Hot 100 chart through Billboard Chart’s official Twitter account (@billboardcharts).
BTS showed their love for ARMY through Twitter after charting at #1. BTS members Tweeted a video through their official Twitter account (@BTS_twt) congratulating their fans for helping them chart at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with a post that said “We love you, we love you, we love you!” This Tweet not only gained more than 7.1 million views, it also led to over 2.2 million likes and 784K retweets.
ARMYs around the world spread the news of BTS’ top Billboard Hot 100 rank through keywords such as BTS, 방탄소년단, Dynamite, and 다이너마이트 as well as hashtags #BTS and #Dynamite. Fans also left congratulatory messages on BTS’ official Twitter account @BTS_twt. During the three-day period (August 31st to September 2nd) when the Billboard rankings were released, over 46 million Tweets were generated in various languages all around the world, including Korean, English, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, and French. From August 3rd, when the news of the new single “Dynamite” was first released, until September 3rd (KST), a total of 275 million Tweets were generated through keywords BTS, 방탄소년단, and Dynamite and hashtags #BTS, #BTSARMY, #BTS_Dynamite, #Dynamite, #방탄소년단, and #다이너마이트. Fans also included BTS’ official Twitter accounts @BTS_twt, @BTS_bighit in Tweets.
ARMYs were not the only ones celebrating the news, as international pop stars also sent congratulatory messages. Pop stars such as The Weeknd (@theweeknd) and Jonas Brothers (@jonasbrothers) sent congratulations to BTS through Twitter.
The Twitter conversation between President Moon Jae-in and BTS became a hot topic in Korea. President Moon, who is well known for communicating with the public through Twitter, sent a congratulatory message to BTS through his official Twitter account (@moonriver365). BTS’ response attracted the attention of many people. President Moon left a congratulatory Tweet in both Korean and English. The Korean Tweet received over 510,000 likes and roughly 200,000 retweets.
BTS’ Tweets in response to President Moon's congratulations also became a hot topic, recording 590,000 likes and 230,000 Retweets.
Twitter also joined in on the celebration for BTS’ historic #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Twitter launched a special emoji campaign when BTS first unveiled the new single’s title ‘Dynamite’. It has effectively captured the attention of ARMY around the world. The emoji, which was automatically applied to Tweets that used the hashtags #BTS, #Dynamite, #방탄소년단, and #다이너마이트, was initially provided as an image of fire, but later got changed without notice to a disco ball in time for the music video’s release. At this, the fans made different speculations as for why the Emoji changed, such as “There will be a disco version music video”, contributing to the spread of BTS’s new single ‘Dynamite’.
In May of 2018, BTS’ Love Yourself: Tear (stylized as LOVE YOURSELF 轉 Tear) charted on Billboard 200, Billboard's main album chart, and created waves all around the world. This time, BTS has reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100, successfully gaining the group the historic title of the first Korean artist to dominate both Billboard charts. Even before their debut, BTS actively communicated with ARMYs around the world through Twitter. We wonder if the efforts of BTS, who place such a high importance on communication with ARMYs, is what lead them to rank #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
After 1 week of the great news, BTS posted a video on Twitter to celebrate “No.1 on Billboard Hot 100 for 2 consecutive weeks’. This tweet drove 17.4 million views, 2.6 million likes, and 1 million retweets.
