With significant launches from a host of big brands, #MWC18 has been another mobile and tech extravaganza. Throughout it all people have been turning to Twitter to get their first looks, watch the live streams and join in the conversation.
Samsung wowed with the launch of the Galaxy S9, which was revealed live on Twitter at its #Unpacked event. The launch ensured that @Samsungmobile remained one of the most mentioned brands in Barcelona.
The other brand that dominated the conversation at #MWC18 was Nokia. For two years in a row, it has grabbed headlines. Last year saw the return of the 3310 and this year the brand launched a raft of new phones. The one that caught everyone’s imagination was the return of the 8110 aka the 'banana phone', which was made famous by Keanu Reeves in the Matrix movies.
There were also big launches from @sonyxperia, @Lenovo, @HuaweiMobile and @ASUS. All of these brands featured in the daily real-time conversation taking place on Twitter during #MWC18, which we partnered in reporting with social listening leader Brandwatch.
Who won the conversation?
In the battle of the brands, @NokiaMobile and @Samsungmobile vied for the pole position at #MWC18 throughout the week on Twitter along with other brands. It was Nokia, however, that topped the conversation in terms of volume, according to @Brandwatch.
The products
As well as being the most mentioned brands, Nokia and Samsung also dominated the conversation when it came to products as you can see from our Brandwatch data. This time it was Samsung's turn to lead.
Tech
The competition for the most mentioned tech at #MWC18 was dominated by the Internet of Things, and 5G with the latter picking up more and more mentions as the week progressed. This was enough for it to top the tech table. You can see all the tech that got people talking below.
Throughout the week, the Twitter team was in Barcelona sharing daily Periscope broadcasts with @BIUK and @24h_tve. We also shared a series of daily Twitter Moments that you can find here, here, here and here.
In addition, we spoke to @VisaInEurope's Mike Lemberger, Senior VP, Head of Product & Solutions, Europe about what @Visa was up to at #MWC18.
Video on Twitter
At Mobile World Congress we highlighted great examples of how brands are using video on Twitter. Video sits at the heart of many of the technologies at #MWC, and it has changed the way people consume and express themselves on Twitter. Check these out.
