How the #usopen unfolded on Twitter

This year’s @usopen didn’t end the way many tennis fans thought it would — with Serena Williams (@serenawilliams) completing a calendar year grand slam — but the results and coverage on Twitter were just as exciting.

In the end, it was not Serena but Flavia Pennetta (@flavia_pennetta) claiming the women’s singles title over Serena’s semifinal usurper — and Pennetta’s fellow Italian — Roberta Vinci (@roberta_vinci). On the men’s side, top-seeded Novak Djokovic (@DjokerNole) defeated second-seeded Roger Federer (@rogerfederer) to claim his 10th major title.

Throughout the tournament, fans turned to Twitter to follow the compelling storylines as they played out at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City. The conversation was led by @USOpen, which Tweeted clips of the winning moments almost instantaneously:
