British indie darlings Alt-J won the day on Wednesday, June 18 with their song “Hunger of the Pine” holding down the top spot. The song features a sample of Miley Cyrus singing “I’m a female rebel” from “4x4.” Miley’s Tweet about the track helped drive Twitter buzz.
Other notable chart trends in the last seven days include “Foreign” by @TreySongz (thanks in part to an MTV stream of his album “Trigga”), “To Love and Die” from Jhene Aiko (@jheneaiko) — released on the same day she was featured on the cover of VIBE — and “Thinking Out Loud“ by @EdSheeran, whose anticipated album “x” came out June 23. Freestyle editions of Drake’s “0-100” are making regular appearances on the Trending 140. The latest entry to the growing canon is from Waka Flocka Flame (@WakaFlockabsm) who hit #1 with “Real Quick”.
Emerging artists shine
Nika Danilova, aka Zola Jesus (@ZolaJesus), put forth her new single “Dangerous Days” on June 23. UK producers Snakehips (@snakehipsuk) climbed up the Trending 140 with new song “Days with You.”
@FKATwigs “Two Weeks” topped the chart on June 24 after a premiere by Ellie Goulding on BBC’s Radio 1 show and a new music video.
Music videos matter
@RobinThicke’s risqué video “Get Her Back” features the singer getting stripped down as he sings the words he wrote to try and persuade ex Paula Patton to give him another chance.
@Coldplay’s “A Sky Full of Stars” hit #1 on Thursday, with a video the band shot with fans in Sydney, Australia.
@OKGo’s clever “The Writing’s On the Wall” video, true to the band’s history with the format, went to the top Trending 140 position and gained 2 million views on YouTube in just 2 days.
