Gearing up for all things #WorldCup

Tuesday, 10 June 2014

Last week, our #WorldCup how-to-follow guide provided tips, including accounts and hashtags to follow, to help you join the global viewing party on Twitter. With the start of the World Cup just two days away, we’re excited to offer you even more ways to keep up with the all the action, on and off the pitch.

With anticipation building as the start of the World Cup nears, we created a video to celebrate the games.

Twitter offers you and other fans around the world a front row seat to all 64 matches. Whether you’re on Twitter for iPhone, Twitter for Android or twitter.com, you can easily follow all the matches, players, coaches and more.

Hashflags are back, along with other features to help you keep up with the #WorldCup.

Signing up for Twitter

If the World Cup brings you to Twitter for the first time, it’s easier than ever to get started on Twitter and keep up with the World Cup. After you sign up and choose your username, you can select the team you’re supporting. Then you can choose from a number of profile and header photos that represent your country. (Of course, you can upload your own photos too.)

After you’ve created your profile, you can easily follow along with what’s happening via our World Cup timelines (more on those below). If you’re already on Twitter, you can also support your team and take advantage of these new World Cup features by clicking here

World Cup timelines

The World Cup and match timelines make it easy to stay up to date with the World Cup –– search for or tap on #WorldCup or #WorldCup2014 to view them. In the World Cup timeline, you can view Tweets related to the World Cup from people in your network, along with relevant Tweets from teams, players, coaches, press, fans in the stadiums and celebrities.

The match timeline shows Tweets about specific matches that are happening in real time to help you keep up with the latest goals, saves, fouls and more — even if you’re not near a TV. And if you want to only view Tweets with photos and videos, just choose the photos-only view.

Additionally, we’ll be rolling out updated web profiles for each team over the next few days, which will include a list of their players on Twitter, as well as match scorecards.

For those of you who will be following the World Cup on Tweetdeck, check out this video for a few tips.

Hashflags

Hashflags are a fun and easy way to add some color to your Tweets, and after introducing them in 2010, we’re bringing them back for this year’s World Cup. Use a hashtag in front of the relevant three-letter country code, and that country’s flag will appear after the text.

We’ll tally up all of the Tweets with hashflags over the next few days and unveil The World Cup of Tweets bracket prior to the first match this Thursday between host country @CBF_Futebol (#BRA) and @HNS_CFF (#CRO).

Send a Tweet cheering on your team with a hashflag here. And be sure to follow @TwitterData and @TwitterSports to see the winner on Thursday.
