June 5 marked the 32nd anniversary of the discovery of HIV/AIDS. In commemoration, RED, the global advocacy group that engages the private sector in the fight against AIDS, organized a worldwide campaign to create a new world record – on Vine.
Teaming up with Mashable, RED set a record for the most number of Vines created for a cause. Over the twenty-four hour period starting at midnight, fully 1,659 Vine videos were created around the globe with (RED) themed content, all tagged with the campaign’s hashtag: #REDWorldRecord. Rules stipulated that all Vines must either audibly or visually promote the social cause, and many a Viner became exceedingly creative with the task at hand.
Included among the submissions were Vines from the likes of David Guetta, Sophia Bush, and Twitter founders Biz Stone and Jack Dorsey, all indirectly or overtly promoted RED’s goal to create an AIDS-free generation by 2015. Many of the campaign Vines were featured on Mashable’s homepage and on the NASDAQ tower and marquee screen in Times Square for all to see.
