In early September, small businesses from across Nova Scotia descended on Cape Breton for #PitchTweet, an original competition focused on teaching individuals how to tell their stories and effectively pitch their products and services on Twitter.
The #PitchTweet competition was launched by Innovacorp (@innovacorp) with a goal of challenging entrepreneurs and companies to stretch their marketing skills by using Twitter to reach a global audience quickly.
Innovacorp Executive Director of the Momentum initiative Bob Pelley (@bobpelley) points to the expanding and increasingly fertile start-up environment in Nova Scotia (and Cape Breton, in particular) as an inspiration for the competition.
He comments, “Cape Breton boasts a growing start-up community, as it offers affordable office space, a strong community and support from organizations and entrepreneurs who are already established here. It’s often thought that you need to be in a large central city when launching a business but companies in Cape Breton have proven that thought process wrong.”
After a full day of #PitchTweet workshops about how to effectively use Twitter for business and how to craft the perfect pitch led by pitch coach Permjot Valia (@permjotvalia), the competition launched. The competition had two streams with a local winner, judged live at the event, and a global winner, announced 24 hours after the competition launched.
The winning Tweets were selected by this panel of industry experts:
Some key takeaways were that images can be powerful and guide your message and the use of short concise sentences are important when delivering a specific message.
The local competition was won by the team from @45Drives, a Sydney, NS-based company that specializes enterprise class storage servers with customers across North America.
The global competition was won by the team from @TourismCB, a Cape Breton based organization who promotes tourism for the area.
Congratulations to @45Drives, @TourismCB and all entrants to the #PitchTweet competition.
