Twitter is where Canadians come to find out #WhatsHappening across the country and around the world. In 2017, live streaming video content was a big part of that experience with top personalities, media outlets and everyday Canadians broadcasting their stories and taking the opportunity to #GoLive to the planet.

Here are some prime example of how Canadians are harnessing the power of live video on Twitter.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (@JustinTrudeau) set the pace early in January 2017 when he became the first sitting world leader to broadcast live via Periscope 360. This took place during a town hall event in Calgary with more than 195,000 viewers watching on Twitter as Trudeau took questions from Canadians.

In June 2017, the Canadian Football League (@CFL) became Twitter’s first-ever content partner worldwide to debut a program taped live at a Twitter office. #CFLThisWeek, a lively half-hour magazine program hosted by Brodie Lawson (@BrodieLawson) and three-time #GreyCup champion Davis Sanchez (@DavisSanchez) with guest appearances by CFL’s Max Rosenberg (@maxmillien), was viewed by more than 1,000,000 football fans during its inaugural season.

We also hosted the press conference to announce the 14th commissioner of the CFL Randy Ambrosie (@RandyAmbrosie). The event was attended by dozens of top Canadian sports media and live streamed exclusively on Periscope.

2017 was also a year of Canadians firsts from the world of entertainment. Twitter Canada worked closely with our longtime partner MUCH (@MUCH) on pair of unique global live streams programs.

The first was an exclusive pre-show for the 2017 Much Music Video Awards (#MMVAs) featuring a number of emergent Canadian creators and MUCH personalities. The second was SIDES (@SIDES), an original social-first series feature lively commentary from Canadian Millennials, talking about key news issues and social trends of the day.
