New #AustraliaDay emoji unveiled

Saturday, 23 January 2016

Whether you’re celebrating this 26 January by swimming at the beach, firing up the BBQ, or watching fireworks, make sure you’re part of the #AustraliaDay celebrations with our custom #AustraliaDay Twitter emoji.

New #AustraliaDay emoji unveiled Tweeting an #AustraliaDay emoji is simple. Just use the hashtag #AustraliaDay, and a cute emoji of a koala wearing green and gold shades will automatically appear on your Tweet.

After getting their first look, Twitter fans weighed in to name the charming creature through a Twitter Poll. In a landslide decision, “Barry” emerged the winner. Welcome to Twitter, Barry the Koala! We’ll be calling you Bazza in no time.

For the third consecutive year, the National Australia Day Council (@OzDay), the National Museum of Australia (@NMA), and @TwitterAU have partnered for the #AustraliaDay Your Way campaign to capture how Aussies around the world celebrate #AustraliaDay 2016.

Tweets using #AustraliaDay will be included in a live, digital exhibition hosted by the National Museum on 26 January, and added to a permanent Twitter Time Capsule. You can see the exhibition online at

Whatever you’re doing on Australia Day, snap a photo or shoot a video and Tweet it with #AustraliaDay to generate the emoji and be part of this national story.

Also as part of this year’s #AustraliaDay campaign, this week @TwitterAU launched the emoji at the National Museum of Australia (@NMA) in Canberra with prominent Australians like singer Reece Mastin (@reecemastin), legendary marathoner and Victorian Australia Day Ambassador Steve Moneghetti (@steve_mona), and NSW Australia Day Ambassador and fashion expert Donny Galella (@DonnyGalella).
